Course description:  This class will focus on the development of reading, writing, oral communication, and state-level test taking skills.  We will be focusing on weekly etymology/vocabulary lists, Daily Oral Language, journal writing, SSR, grammar, reading skills, and improving writing skills.  Our writing will stress expository essay format, biographical narrative, persuasive essays, business letters, and responses to literature.   

 

Curriculum:  Short stories, articles, poetry excerpts, articles, and other outside literature will be covered in the class.  This class will be using the Glencoe Literature curriculum.  Additionally, we will cover three to four novels including Of Mice and Men, Bless Me, Ultima, and Night.

 

Materials Required for Class:  All materials should be brought to class daily.

 

  1. Three-ring binder (at least 1” thick), hardcover, with dividers
  2. Composition book for journal writing
  1. Multiple pens (black and blue ink only), pencils, and plenty of paper
  1. Poster paper and other materials may be required occasionally (students will be notified in advance)
  2. Independent Reading books.
  3. Computer or phone with Internet access to TEAMS.

 

SSR (Silent Sustained Reading):  Students will be required to participate in SSR.  I will be assigning 30 minutes of independent reading on Wednesdays. Students are also expected to be reading independently at home on a daily basis.

 

Grading Policy:  Students grades will be weighted as follows:

 

Classwork/Homework    45%                                                   

Tests/Quizzes               45%

Participation in LIVE teaching and learning time 10%                                       

 

Grading Scale:  The following grading scale will be used:

A  90-100%     B  80-89%        C  70-79%        D  60-69%        F 59% or lower

 

Homework:  Homework will be assigned regularly during the week, and on some weekends.  It is due at the beginning of class!  Any late work accepted will receive reduced points.  NO EXCEPTIONS!  This is an English Department requirement.  For assignments with a due date given considerably ahead of time, no work will be accepted if student is absent on the day the assignment is due.  Prior arrangements must be made.

 

*Students with excused absences will be allowed to make up work missed, but the same restrictions will apply beginning from the date he/she returns to school (see above).

*Students with unexcused absences will NOT be allowed to make up any missed work. 

Parents:  It is your child’s responsibility to ask for the work he/she missed. 

 

If we return to distance learning:  During TEAMS classes from home, work assigned on Mondays will be due Wednesdays by 9PM. For Work assigned Tuesdays, work will be due Thursdays by 9PM. Pay attention to deadlines specified for work assigned on Wednesdays or for exceptions to that rule. You will be allowed to turn in work late; however, TEAMS will automatically recognize it as LATE and you will receive 50% of credit. This policy is to encourage you to stay on top of your assignments and not wait until grades are due to get started on the assignments.

 

 

Submitting Work:  All hand-written work must include the following in the upper right-hand corner, or it will not be accepted (student will receive 0 points).  A paper with no name does not get scored.

During TEAMS classes from home, all work will be submitted on TEAMS. If a different app will be used, I will note that specifically.

 

Requirements for Typed Assignments: 

*Double-spaced    *1” margins all the way around    *12 point font   *White paper only

*Times New Roman Font    *Name, Date, Period & Assignment Title (typed, in MLA format)

 

Classroom Procedures/Rules:

  1. Attendance- Attendance will be taken directly in person or from TEAMS participation log to the live portion of the class. You will join the teams meeting under the posts section for our team. Join our meeting with your microphones on mute until it is your turn to speak. Please take bathroom breaks during passing periods and during independent work time.
  2. Starting Class- Students are to be prepared for class with all materials and logged into teams ready to join our meeting.
  3. Plagiarism- Students are expected to submit their own, original work. Students will receive 0 points for copied or plagiarized assignments, along with a referral to the office with a request for a parent conference.  The teacher will be verifying every essay to ensure the student is using his/her own words.  No make-ups are allowed for plagiarized work.
  4. ELECTRONIC DEVICES will be monitored during class. We will be using the surfaces for TEAMS and other classwork. Please keep your phones, ipods, mp3 players, PSPs, etc in your backpack, purse, or pocket during class time.  If cell phone use becomes a problem; teacher will confiscate devices and turn them in to administration.
  5. Food or drink: A personal water bottle is allowed in class. There is NO sharing of food or drink items in class.
  6. Each student gets THREE passes per semester. Please use your passes wisely and only for emergencies. Students needing medical accommodations must have a doctor’s note turned in to school office. The office will communicate with teachers and note on the student’s file.
